TIP: Kelela – The High

Kelela

Came across this gem of a track while doing the customary end of week round-up of fresh Soundcloud sounds to add to the wants list. No download link or even a buy option but when you see something connected to the man like Gifted & Blessed in your stream, it’s always good to sit up and take notice. The result is normally the right side of otherworldly.  On this track, simply called ‘The High’, he most certainly supplies the goods, crafting a dark and brooding bed of beats over which Kelela’s vocal soars. The DC born, Los Angeles dwelling singer has certainly hit the spotlight recently, a 60 minute Boiler Room live set in LA, attention grabbing debut mixtape (“Cut 4 Me”) and an end of year nomination on the the BBC’s Sound of 2014 longlist, all serving to put her front and centre in the minds of the music press at year end.  The songs continue to flow though and if the quality control remains this high, who are we argue with the great British institution?
