Kyle Hall - FACT Mix 55
Y’all know we love our house music on this site, so when Bopstar dropped us a link to the latest FACT Magazine mix on Twitter, we were all over it. The 55th installment of the mix series (which has already brought through some heavyweight pressure from many of the big names on the underground music scene) features Detroit young lion Kyle Hall doing his thing on a Detroit house tip.

The 18 year old producer first entered our universe while we were digging through the fine Mood & Grooves record catalogue in late 2008 and we happened across their latest release, Kyle’s The Water Is Fine EP. Listening through the EP, our ears pricked at the absolute monster 9 minute A-side wonder that is “Create Your Own Existence”, pulled it out and then literally span it on our radio stream until an inch of its life (it might still be on there come to think of it).

Having surrounded himself in his tutoring with the likes of Detroit cats Rick Wilhite, Mike Huckaby and Omar-S (the latter having recently produced a mixtape comprised solely of Kyle Hall productions), he’s in good company, and is definitely one to watch in the Motor City’s  underground house new guard.

You can read FACT’s full length interview with Kyle on the their site but in the meanwhile get the mix from the link below and put it on spin. Tracklist looks good, don’t it?

simbad – supercosmic revolution vol.1 (brainfeeder mixtape)

Simbad presents ‘Supercosmic Revolution Vol.1′

The man like Flying Lotus pulled out another essential Brainfeeder podcast late last night which I caught and rebroadcast on our Twitter. After giving it a second listen this morning on the commute (it had me getting in at double time, which was useful, cos I was 20 minutes late!), thought it might be worth highlighting here, as this one really is just plain ridiculous. One of our favourite DJs Simbad is on mixing duties and this 71 minute mix has everything you could ever need: Burial-esque dubstep, deep house, banging future music, all interwoven with clever movie and news samples. No tracklist unfortunately (Simbad actually posted a tracklist up this afternoon on his myspace) but when he ramps the whole thing up around the 35 minute mark, it really does take it to whole nutha level. Heavily recommended as its a banger.

dj spinna drops “the recall” mixtape (courtesy of high water music)

DJ Spinna Presents "The Recall" Mixtape

A little Friday afternoon mixtape treat.

Yes, yes, that’s right, one of our favourite music producers (whether it be hip hop or house) drops a new mixtape to promote his forthcoming album “Sonic Smash” on High Water Music. 32 classic Spinna remixes and productions on a hip hop tip. We’ve been bouncing this in the office all morning and its sounding nice. Why can’t all hip hop sound like this? Still one of the best in the game. Anyways you can cop the link to the mix below (its a z-share, gotta save our bandwidth a bit at the minute).

Make sure you check the new album out when it drops later this month on June 30th. With confirmed guests Phonte of Little Brother, Elzhi of Slum Village, Jigmastas, Fresh Daily, it looks like it could be a heavyweight and another great release for the High Water Music label. They’ve already leaked one track from the album, “Summer Madness”, an awesome Spinna flip of the Kool & The Gang classic. As a little extra, I’ve added both the original and instrumental mixes of said track in there for posterity.

steve kiw – summer shakedown mixtape

Steve KIW - Summer Shakedown Mixtape

With just over six weeks to go before our Summer Shakedown boat party featuring our motley crew of soulful selectors and very special guest Greg Wilson (Tirk) , we thought we’d bring you a little guest mixtape from one of the main protagonists, Steve KIW, who will will be warming up for Mr Wilson on the main deck. Here, digging into his deep vinyl archives, he’s brought us a little exclusive discoboogiecallitwhatyouwant mix giving you an insight into some of the sounds you’ll likely hear on the boat on that (hopefully) sunny Saturday afternoon in July.

Steve, who has been DJing for more than half of his life (meaning he’s only just done less DJ mileage than Sir Jimmy Saville), is a stickler for dusty old vinyl and lugging three records bags about, rather than using the convenience of modern technology and digital formats. Before fleeing London for the fairer climes and more sedate life of the Brighton seaside, the KIW spent his formative years as a resident at the infamous ‘Babushka’ parties in Blackfriars (strangely the departure point for our own boat party) and the ‘Fallen Angels’ parties at Hanover Grand. He also spent many a night (well, often afternoons) putting on his own events such as ‘Your Mum’ (quaint) and ‘Keeping It Wheel’ (hence the KIW moniker). Obviously the KIW stuck and after a handful of failed retirements, Steve can now be found doing intimate gigs by the sea as part of the Go Bang collective. He also holds down a couple of other residencies in Brighton(‘The Freestyle Sessions’ at The Fishbowl twice a month and ‘More Freestyle Sessions’ at Brighton Rocks to name but two) and as a founding member ofthe legendary Balearic Assassins Of LOVE, Steve can occasionally be found playing balearic weirdness in a cave.

The Summer Shakedown mix was put together in Steve’s stately record room where Abba sits next to ABC, Prefab Sprout next to Public Enemy, Yellow Magic Orchestra sit next to Yes (yeah, its all alphabetised) and where there are more than 600 12″s by artists whose name begins with the letter ‘B’.

He’s always churning out musical mixes (puts me to shame really), so if you like what you hear and want to grab more, nip over to his Facebook group entitled ‘KIW: Keeping It Wheel’ here.
