Having ventured home from work last Thursday evening, I settled down to prepare a snack before heading out to Plastic People for the monthly CDR session. Quickly scouring Twitter (something I seem to be spending more and more time on these days – like some sick addiction), I came across a group of tweets raving about a live internet broadcast of a musical performance featuring Carl Craig and surviving members of the celebrated Detroit jazz collective, Tribe.

It is some seven years since the Detroit uber-producer’s initial collaboration with some of the Motor City’s finest jazz luminaries, including Tribe founder member Marcus Belgrave, a venture which bore the fruit of the highly regarded Ropeadope LP “The Detroit Experiment“. In 2007, Craig and Belgrave reunited along with original Tribe musicians, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin and Doug Hammond to record a new album entitled “Rebirth” for Carl Craig’s Planet E / Community Projects labels (More on that in a moment).

Now there had already been quite a bit of buzz around the album before last Thursday’s show at the Cité de la Musique in Paris, so tuning in to the live feed was a necessity. Still rocking this restrictive internet setup at home, I wasn’t at all hopeful of copping any sort of viewing over the internet but as it happened, after I’d hopped over to the Grandcrew website, it worked like a dream (well with a bit of buffering here and there). What transpired next was nothing short of inspiring. Over an approximate hour and forty minutes, the band set to work weaving together tracks from their back catalogue (both “The Detroit Experiment” and original Tribe compostions of the 1970’s), plus tracks from what I believe to be their new album. Drummer Doug Hammond even pulls a little solo skit, playing the thumb piano and singing a few tracks from his “A Real Deal” LP on Heavenly Sweetness. Thinking this was a once in a lifetime occurence, I pretty much stayed the distance, killing my monthly bandwidth allowance in the process and eventually leading me to be late to the club.

So imagine my surprise when an email dropped into my account this afternoon from the Grandcrew people with the full video available to stream. Bit of a result. Below I’ve embedded the link, so you can catch all the fuss. It’s long but so very worth it. In an age where computers are used to synthesise instruments, its a timely reminder to what an impact a well versed band can make when this kind of show is put on. Enjoy at your leisure.

Produced in its entirety by Carl Craig, the street date for the physical “Rebirth” album is 06 October 2009 in the US, with, I’m hoping, a worldwide release soon after. If you’re so inclined, you can head over to the iTunes store now and get your hands on a digital version of the album already, which has been released since August 24th. In addition to starring the original Tribe quartet of Belgrave, Harrison, Ranelin and Hammond, the album also features playing by younger Detroit players including Amp Fiddler (keys), Karriem Riggins (drums), John Arnold (guitar) and Kelvin Sholar (rhodes). Tracklisting and album art follow, plus I’ve included a second video, a preview to how the whole concept was born, with insights from the original Tribe members and Craig himself. You even get some brief footage of the band at work.

It’s been a while. Moving back to the ‘Mecca of Cool’ that is Dalston has meant we’ve been out of touch for a min but that’s all sorted now. The Live365 radio stream is now being constantly updated with newness, a new radio show/podcast should be joining the already crowded market that is onine streaming audio (fingers crossed, even if we have to host it ourselves) and work has started on a brand new website (expect that sometime in 2012!)

In the meantime, here’s some of our recommended Londoncentric sessions for people that like the music that we do. There are still some of you out there right? Or have you all started listening to Kings of Leon?

First up… Ladybugz Heavyweights birthday Party @ East Village

Absolutely heavyweight lineup if you like your beats somewhat left of centre and your house underground. Featuring the the likes of Mr Phil Asher, DJ Cosmo, Afronaught, Seiji, Rap Saunders and the Ladybugz (Katie Barber, Marcia Carr, T Maronie and Miss Callie) in the East Village basement and Andy Bird, Johnny Reckless, Toni Rosanno, Bopstar, Souled and DJ Bones upstairs in the Deco Lounge, this has the potential to be a huge night. 9pm until 4am. Its £6 before 11pm and £8 thereafter.

Nonsense w/ Cooly G, Josey Rebelle and Katie Skills @ Plastic People

Saturday, sees the return of Nonsense to the little club with the BIG system, Plastic People, for a ladies special. Alongside residents Judah, Benny Blanco and Mr Wonderful, you also get the talents of Hyperdub’s Cooly G (Download her recent MTV Brazil Tranquera Mixtape here… some serious proto-dubstep-house goodness) plus Josey Rebelle and Katie Skills. Expect big things in a afrosouljazzhiphopdubstepdetroitboogiedisco kind of way. 10.30pm-4.30am. £6 all night. Bargain.

Sunday is all about The Soul Power Party, a collaboration between supreme Put Me On It blog, Eric Lau’s Sunday residency Pause and independent magazine Shook to bring you a special event centred around last Summer’s “Soul Power” film. If you haven’t caught the film yet you’re in luck as there’s a limited number of discount tickets for a screening of the film at The Electric Cinema on Portobello Road at 3pm Sunday.Tickets are on sale now. Drop a line to info@putmeonit.com to cop the discount (if there’s any left).

The film itself is an amazing documentary about the three day festival which took place in Zaire in ‘74 prior to the infamous Ali/ Foreman “Rumble in The Jungle” fight, and featured performances from James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Miriam Makeba, Celia Cruz, the Fania Allstars and more. Loving a bit of Latin and afro funk ourselves, we really should get on it, and probably will.

To complete the weekend, and make Monday a chore, there’ll be a free after party for the film at Market Place Sunday evening featuring DJs Charlie Dark (Blacktronica), Eric Soul (Afrogroov), Bemi (Amplified), Eric Lau, Juven and H!ts (Pause). In line with the film’s themes, you can expect a soundtrack of afro/funk/soul music from ‘74 to ‘09 plus there’ll also be an Afroboutique and in-house stylist for all your beauty needs(!). You’ll also be able to pick up the latest issue of Shook #6 which came out last week plus some free isht namely t-shirts and DVDs, which should be floating about along with a few more surprises.

Whatever you end up doing, have a good one. It’s looking like a monster weekend for us.

Been a crazy month so far what with Ibiza and boat parties, and this weekend it doesn’t seem to want to let up. Here are some of the Soul-Identity recommended sessions to tempt you out in this disasterous London weather this weekend.

First up… CDR Special @ 93 East – Free Fridays!

CDR Special @ 93 East - Free Fridays!

The CDR/Burntprogress crew branch out from their well received monthly club night at Plastic People to bring you a one off special in one of Brick Lane’s most renowned spaces, 93 Feet East. Joining CDR founder Mr Tony Nwachukwu on the decks on the night will be the Spacebass crew featuring Floatingpoints from Eglo Records, responsible for the massive Soul-Identity favourite “Love Me Like This”, alongside Liamski, Ben V (Shook Magazine), Davin (Werk Discs) and Chris CTOP. Further DJ support comes from those Soundspecies guys, whose immense self titled debut was released on the Burntprogress label earlier this year. Not heard it yet? Then go grab the Ahu-voiced treasure “Can We Call It Love” for free from the Burntprogress Soundcloud, then go and give the LP a listen and order it from IfMusic. Entry is free and tied into the bargain you get three mighty live acts, namely She Is Danger, Phantom and The Mighty Jeddo. Sounds alright don’t it. I’ll be down from 9pm. Come down, say hello and I’ll buy you a pint.

Friday also sees the return or Todd Terje to these shores. If you’re up for something a bit more disco orientated, everyone’s favourite re-edit king is playing at East Village. Entry is £6 before 11pm, £8 after.

Saturday, Greg Wilson plays the Special Needs 5th Birthday Party at The Lockside Lounge (Free b4 8pm, £5 after), Chicago’s favourite disco son DJ Rahaan is making a rare UK appearance for Love Fever set in a secret Shoreditch loft space (this is sold out, but holla at andy@birdsongmusic.com and beg cos its gonna be one ridiculous party) and finally our man from Here & Now Recordings, JC, presides over what seemingly is to be the final Afrobeat Vibration at The Empowering Church in Dalston. It now appears that I’ll be mainly behaving myself in a grown up capacity around strangers that night, although in all fairness all three of the above suggest something nice to these old ears, so if you’re at a loose end and around the area you really should try and support.

Its hella late (its been a busy week) but here’s a few thoughts about our Summer Shakedown Boat Party with Greg Wilson which occured this past Saturday on The Thames. It’s actually a cheeky re-edit spliced together from some notes I originally transcribed and some memories of the day recorded on the Norman Jay Website, but I hope it’ll give you a taster of what you missed (or alternatively, encountered if you were actually there)…

—

Wow, what a weekend!

Got to thank everybody that bought tickets and turned up on the day to join us. That was possibly the best crowd I’ve ever had the pleasure of partying with – all good people, up for a drink, some laughs and a little boogie.

Steve KIW did a sterling job warming up for Mr Wilson on the main deck from the off with a heads down disco set as everyone basked outside in the sun. Greg then duly stepped up and smashed it (as expected). Loads of classics, edits, original bits and pieces all spliced together with a laptop, a mixer and his Revox reel to reel. Few bits and pieces I recall were the Todd Terje remix of “Superstition”, the Hallucinogenic Version of “Ain’t Nobody”, the Hot Coins re-edit of “Stand On The World”, “Two Sides of Sympathy” (The Amerie/Massive Attack mashup), Last Rhythm’s “Last Rhythm” plus our ever eternal favourite: The Frankie Knuckles remix of Loose Ends’ “Hangin’ On A String”. Proper feel good music. Dropping the Hues Corporation’s “Rock The Boat” as the final track was genius. Weather held up lovely (if a little cloudy) until we actually stopped at the pier, then it was just a light smattering of rain. Definitely blessed after last week’s dreadful forecast of grey skies and torrential raind. The fact we had to kick everyone off the lower deck as we pulled in to get them back up for Greg’s finale was classic. The Cigarettes and Sunshine boys were definitely getting into the swing of things by the end of it.

Then to the afters at Cos Bar. Getting enough people back to the bar to then have it kick off again till 1am was really special.

Our boys dropping the early doors Hackney basement vibes then Mr KIW again smashing it with an 80’s classic set to ensure that everyone stayed on the dancefloor. Our evening guest John Cunningham from Here & Now Recordings then carried the torch with a wicked boogie disco set. I’d had too many shandies at this point but I’m sure Sylvester’s effervescent “Over and Over” got a rinse to rapturous applause and more ridiculous stuff was pulled. We did a little set before The C&S boys closed the party with another bout of wicked tunes.

Final tunes of the night: “Good Life” dropped by me, then “Never Can Say Goodbye” by The Jacksons by C&S’s Saturday Kid. A very fitting tune considering I had another seven revellers carry on the party at the Boglewaltz Warehouse bash (Google It!), and one worse for wear fellow follow me down the road as I was leaving. “You Alright Mate” I said. “Just following the Boat Party Sir” He replied, lol.

Full respect to Mr Wilson (a pleasure Sir), Steve KIW, the Cigarette & Sunshine Crew: Dave, Lee and Danny for co-hosting with me. Stu Dennis, Will Durden , JC and Rob Le Marchand for providing more quality music at the afters, and all the people who lended a hand on the day, namely my girlfriend Michelle, Kathy Ellis, my co-promoter and money man Rob, the Ticketweb door girls Dawn and Gina (who were a godsend when it all looked like it was gonna go wrong).

Big shouts to Rob Wilkes (thanks again for the sterling effort on the flyer Sir) and all the friends and family I saw down there including Bongo Dave, who just turned up with some bongos on the day and played on the lower deck (well apparently only for my “house set” business).

We got some photos done which will go up here on the site and on the Facebook group over the weekend (got around 100 at the moment, need to whittle it down – think thats a little excessive to post tbh). Mr Wilkes has also kindly allowed me to whack some of his short videos of the day in the group too, so hop over there if you want to get a cheeky 2 min of sampler videos of some of the best bits of the boat.

As for next year? We’re thinking it definitely has to happen again so join the Facebook group or our mailing list to be in the know when we drop the details… the reward – cheap tickets and guaranteed entry. We’re aiming for the same two venues, we just need to organise the logistics a little bit better. And the food aspect. Michelle mentioned she’d never seen so many people eating crisps in her life!

As for what I played over both sessions.

Having a dig about, I think I played the following strictly vinyl set on the boat (not necessarily in this order)

Manuel Tur feat Blakkat – Golden Complexion (Live Dub)
6th Borough Project – Planets
Andres – Love Heals
Glenn Underground – I Feel No Love
Moodymann – Freeki MF
Donnie – Cloud 9 (Quentin Harris Mix)
Soul Bros – Deep Talkin’
Soul Ascendants – Tribute
El Coco – Afrodesia/Coco Kane (Eddie Tour edit)
LTG Exchange – Corazon (Version Idjut)
Seguida – Mambo Rock
Mos Def – Casa Bey
Linkwood Family – Piece Of Mind

… And then I did something similar at the after party, back to back with Rob Le Marchand. Here’s some I remember playing (again not necessarily in any order)

Moodyman – Shades of Jae
Arthur Russell – Wax The Van (Yam Who? Remix)
Situation – Love In Me
Metro Area – Miura
Herbie Hancock – Saturday Night (Beatconductor Remix)
Dam Funk – Hood Pass Intact
Zapp – More Bounce To The Ounce

A big final thanks again to all who turned up. It was definitley up there as one of the most special days of my life so far. Seriously can’t wait till next year.

Oh and for those still wanting to catch Greg in the London area, he’s playing at the Special Needs 5th Birthday Party at the Lockside Lounge in Camden this Saturday. Entry is £5 which is a bargain seeing as you’re catching one of the UK’s most influential DJs in an intimate venue.

Two days now until our big Summer Shakedown boat party with legendary DJ Greg Wilson and its shaping up nicely. Just dropped the final batch of tickets over at Phonica Records in Soho, so if you’re after some last-minute tickets for Saturday, you can now pick them up booking fee free from there.

In the meantime, we’ve got the perfect warm up tonight from the delightfully named Stunt Cock team. Sticking strictly to the boogie nights formula of old, this 1970’s porn themed night drops in at basement club Life (home of the succesful mid week throwdown “Goin’ Downstairs” by Gilles Peterson, Dom Servini and The bPm) for a cheeky little soiree encompassing everything that’s good (and not so good!) about that era. The soundtrack for the evening ranges from killer old school soul right through to your favourite Italo disco faves. Add to that amazing Sushi given away free between 9pm and 10pm70’s, Softcore projected on the wall (if that’s your thing!), crazy ass seedy decor and a gramophone in the side room playing random stuff to make you smile, and I think you’ll agree you’ve got yourself a pretty interesting school night lined up for just£3.

It’s seriously one of my favourite London spots and the food is plain ridiculous, so if you’re around and about Old Street tonight, you should pop by and say hello. I should be down for around 9ish for that free Sushi!

Props to Bling47’s own wunderkind Kenny Fresh, who has singlehandedly been unearthing gems over on his Fresh Selects blog for some time now. Definitely one for your Google Reader. If you keep an eye on our Twitter feed though, you’ll sometimes find us sharing the goodness he has to offer on a weekly basis. However when this baby dropped into our inbox late this afternoon, we just had to post about it right here.

For anyone who’s been asleep for the past month or so LA-based SA-RA Creative Partners finally released an album on Ubiquity Records some five years after first debuting material on the label. But this isn’t that story (expect an album review soon, as soon as I can pin down some listening time). This is about one third of that trio, namely a Mr Shafiq Husayn, former producer for Ice T, who now spends his time alongside band mates Taz Arnold and Om’Mas Keith, melding the futuristic hip hop beats and cosmic soul grooves you hear on the new LP, “Nuclear Evolution: The Age Of Love”.

Since that album has now hit the shelves, it seems the man is getting busy readying his first solo project “Shafiq En A-Free-Ka”, due to be released in October on Plug Research. Kenny set two tracks from the LP free into the open this morning and both are absolute killers. The one we’ve posted below is a low slung, smoothed out, future soul cut entitled ‘Lil Girl’ and features the unmistakeable vocal talents of Eglo’s first lady Fatima.

To cop a listen to the second track, Nirvana, featuring singers Nia Andrews, Noni Limar and Rozzi Daime, head on over to Kenny’s blog post where its available to stream. Put this on your radar now, as the album should be one to look out for this Autumn.

Apologies for the late notice but with Ibizan holidays, work pressures and organising boat parties to attend to, time is pretty short. In any case I just had to log in to mention this… because this has the potential to be something special.

Tomorrow night one of Japan’s deepest diggers and celebrated hip hop DJ/producer, DJ Mitsu The Beats drops into our favourite London club Plastic People to launch his new album “A Word To The Wise”, available now on Jazzy Sport via import, and make a rare UK appearance on his current tour. If you’re in the area tomorrow night, you really shouldn’t have any valid excuse not to drop by as mans is a heavyweight selector whose DJing and production style have gained many plaudits over the years ( those who have tuned in Soul-Identity Radio since its inception will now how much we personally dig the man in question).

DJ support on the night comes from two of London’s most respected DJs cum producers from the underground beats/bruk scene Simbad and Kay Suzuki, and Plastic’s own Saturday night residents, the Non Sense crew (Benny Blanco, Judah and Mr Wonderful).

All for a princely sum of £5 on the door for a school night. Doesn’t sound bad does it. In fact it sounds so good we plan to be there. And so should you. Go on… you know it makes sense.

We’ve already mentioned this little baby on the blog before but with a week to go before it fully drops, we thought it would be a nice time to refresh your memories on probably one of this summer’s most solid albums.

People who’ve stumbled across this site before will no doubt know that the artist otherwise known as Domu (or Dominic Stanton to his mum) has been a major favourite of ours for some time (for a full blow-by-blow lovefest of how much we rate him check here). The fact that under his many aliases he’s gone and produced some pretty fine records of the soulful persuasion (plus some down right bangers too), has meant that we never leave the house without packing at least one or two of his tracks into the record box (You know, for when you need to up that ante a bit)

Well now, looking over his immense, genre-defying back catalogue of material, it seems the good folks over at Tru Thoughts agree and have seen fit to round up a double disc set of his previous tracks for a timely revisit. So after initially pulling a similar stunt for original Tru Thoughts artist Bonobo, and then following it up with comps from Quantic and Nostalgia 77, the fourth in the “One Offs, Remixes & B Sides” series sees the label cast the net a little wider to pull in Domu and the work he’s produced for numerous labels over the past nine years, including his own Trebleo label.

Over the two CDs (split between original productions and remixes) and the 27 tracks, you get just about every conceivable angle of the Domu sound, whether it be the broken beats and low slung futuristic soul he’s become primarily known for, or rather the off kilter hip hop or underground house/proto disco sound he sometimes veers into. For instance on the first disc, the soulful “Message To Omar”, a 12″ released on Archive back in 2000, and the sublime ballad “Last Time” from his debut album Up + Down featuring Nicola Kramer, rub shoulders with the devastating bruk anthems “Worldwide” and “Save It”, plus new track “Springbreak” (included here for the first time and worth the price of admission alone). Over on the Remixes disc, you get a multitude of Domu’s essential reworks including his takes on The Rebirth, Maddslinky, Jazzanova and my personal favourites, his remixes of “Man With The Movie Camera” for The Cinematic Orchestra and “Take It Low” for UK hip hop outfit Broke ‘n’ English. And with much of the music featured taken from many of the labels which made up a significant part of the sadly now defunct Goya distribution stable, it is the first time some of these tracks have even been made available on CD (namely because many came out as strictly vinyl-only releases).

With its far reaching emphasis on Domu’s various production styles, the collection is pretty effective in showcasing the man’s talents and influences, and is a perfect introduction into the minds of one of the UK’s most skilful producers, DJs and remixers. Sure, there’s some other tracks that could of been added (I’d have pretty much liked either “Arrival” or “Unfazed” from his Return of The Rogue album to be sneaked in there), but you know it is really pretty comprehensive as it is.

To get a taster of the whole album, check the tracklists for both CDs and listen to the edited MP3s below to find out what you’re missing. Then hop on over to Tru Thoughts’ EtchShop to order yourself a copy next Monday. While your on that voyage of discovery, you might like to pass by Domu’s blog to catch the man in his own words. It’s normally a pretty entertaining read.

In celebration of the album launch next week, Domu will be playing two UK dates this weekend which you really should try and reach if you’re in town (he really is a sick DJ) . On Friday he’ll be guesting at Moog in Nottingham with two of our favourite Midland’s DJs, Beane (check his latest radio show for a deeply dug Domu special) and Mark A from Soul-Buggin. On Saturday, its the turn of the Market Place where he’ll be joining the legendary Mr Bongo soundsystem and the brothers Kev and Graham Luckhurst for the official launch party. Word is the vocal talents of the UK’s Vanessa Freeman will be in the building, there’ll be copies of the album on sale and they’ll be plenty of freebies in the house as well. Well recommended I reckon. For full details, check the flyers below.

So sometimes we get sent an MP3 straight out of the blue. You know something from an artist we’ve never heard before, that actually turns out to be pretty sick. This would be one of those cases in point. Full respect to Alex Nut at All Young Kings for this one, whose new kid on the block, Eglo Records, have been causing quite some damage in DJs records boxes of late, courtesy of its quality roster of talent incorporating the likes of rising stars Floating Points, Fatima and Shuanise.

With this two track release, FunkinEven AKA Stevie J is the latest addition to that family and enhances the UK label’s already burgeoning reputation as one to watch when it comes to futuristic soulful beats. Currently residing in West London, the beat maker, hot stepper and provider of the funk Stevie J (who in homage to his home land, the cosmic location Funkineven 1956, has taken on its title for his current incarnation) fuses the electronic sounds of house with hip hop, soul and rare groove to bring you a true melting pot of future dancefloor funk.

Both tracks offer something different but both breathe quality (which sad to say is becoming a thing of the past with the current vogue of MP3 throwaway culture). ‘Mad Swing’ is a straight up synth-laden, funk infused hip hop track with female (possibly Muhsinah?) vocal refrains layered deep in the mix. “You!” on the otherhand is a little more uptempo, with a glitchy feel and snatches of that 80s sound (reminds me kind of what Pepe Bradock could do if unleashed on a Dam Funk record). All in all a killer two tracker. Cop both tracks in question below for a limited time only.

In the meantime, for those that don’t know, you can catch Eglo label boss Alex Nut’s weekly radio show ‘Mixed Nuts’ on London’s Rinse FM 1pm-3pm every Saturday, where he drops his own definitive mix of underground beats, off kilter hip hop, future soul and dubstep. And for more of the same, make sure you get your hands on his recently released Rinse 08 mix CD. It’s a banger.

Y’all know we love our house music on this site, so when Bopstar dropped us a link to the latest FACT Magazine mix on Twitter, we were all over it. The 55th installment of the mix series (which has already brought through some heavyweight pressure from many of the big names on the underground music scene) features Detroit young lion Kyle Hall doing his thing on a Detroit house tip.

The 18 year old producer first entered our universe while we were digging through the fine Mood & Grooves record catalogue in late 2008 and we happened across their latest release, Kyle’s The Water Is Fine EP. Listening through the EP, our ears pricked at the absolute monster 9 minute A-side wonder that is “Create Your Own Existence”, pulled it out and then literally span it on our radio stream until an inch of its life (it might still be on there come to think of it).

Having surrounded himself in his tutoring with the likes of Detroit cats Rick Wilhite, Mike Huckaby and Omar-S (the latter having recently produced a mixtape comprised solely of Kyle Hall productions), he’s in good company, and is definitely one to watch in the Motor City’s underground house new guard.

You can read FACT’s full length interview with Kyle on the their site but in the meanwhile get the mix from the link below and put it on spin. Tracklist looks good, don’t it?
