LONDON UNDERGROUND @ LIFE, Old Street
Friday 19th December 2008, 9PM - 2AM
£5 (door)

Friday night sees an Xmas party at one of our favourite East London basements (I know, we have a few). A joint venture between one of the hardest working men on the scene, Wah Wah 45’s Dom Servini, Ross Allen and up and coming DJ, Tristian the bPM - they’ll be joined on the night by Brownswood’s Beccy Grierson and The Clown Prince, who’ll be doing a special live hip hop set. From soul to disco to dubstep and other underground electronic sounds… it should be a good night. Get there early and check the food in the Japanese restaurant above. Niceness ;)

LEND ME YOUR EARS @ THE AMERSHAM ARMS, New Cross
Saturday 20th December 2008, 9PM - 3AM
£7(NUS), £8 (adv), £10 (door)

LEND ME YOUR EARS is the second in a series of not-for-profit fundraisers for the National Deaf Children’s Society.  You may remember us posting the first party this year which was held at Gramaphone in Shioreditch. This time around there’ll be a host of acts and DJs on display from the London underground music scene including, Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson, Kode9 from London dubstep label Hyperdub records.  Rinse FM’s Alex Nut and renowned beatsmiths Architeq and Lukid. All funds from the night will be given to the National Deaf Children’s Society, so easily the best way to do something for charity and still enjoy yourslef this Christmas. Check it.

Flyer for the New Years Eve shakedown at Bedroom Bar 31.12.08

New Year’s Eve Shakedown @ Bedroom Bar, December 31 2008

Well its been a bit of a random year for us, with lots of high and lows but as we head into 2009 things are looking a little rosier, certainly from this side of the fence anyhow. We’re still struggling with sporadic internet access so messages have been a little lacking of late, but let me assure you we’re still beavering away behind the scenes where possible to get things sorted for the new year and beyond. In the meantime, we’ve sorted out one last party for 2008 for enjoyment, so if you’re out and about in London this New Year’s Eve and are looking for a night of good quality music, a nice vibe and a family of friends, we might just have something for you…

In order to kick start 2009 in the right way, we decided to hook up with the OK_Ma boys to bring you a little something something at another of our favourite venues, the Bedroom Bar.  On the night, in the main room you’ll get the very talented Ok_Ma duo Young Lee and Jake (the sax) Telford playing an epic set of live sax n flute with soulful house, disco, broken beats, Latin and Afro rhythms and the odd party classic thrown in for good measure.

In the back room, we’ll be holding court with our good friends the CIgarettes and Sunshine boys and Wah Wah 45s recording artist (album out soon apparently) and all round good guy Scrimshire for a night of house party fuelled madness. Expect soul, funk, hip hop, acid house, good old fashioned rock and roll and a few guilty pleasures to keep the party rocking until sunrise. The party starts from 8pm and will run through to around 5am (assuming we’re all still standing!). There’ll be a few other surprises on the night but lets not give the whole game away just yet!

Advance tickets are £10 and are available from Bedroom Bar via telephone on
020 7613 5637, online via Ticketweb or if you know one of us, physically by giving us a shout.

Here & Now Recordings Launch Party @ Plastic People, September 18 2008

Here & Now Recordings Launch Party @ Plastic People, September 18 2008

Easy now… while we work on exactly how we top the last party (it was a corker, but as it happens it was the LAST party at that venue), here’s a bonafide soul-identity approved session for your attention. Previous soul-identity music guest and all around music good guy, JC brings a night of Here & Now goodness to one of our favourite (if not favourite) London clubs, Plastic People on September 18th. In attendance on the night will be the man like Yam Who?,  Steve Laviers (Motivators) and of course label boss JC. Anyone who’s caught any of the Here & Now releases, will know what to expect - something in the realm of soulful disco boogie bruk afro latin dance music - just the way we like it. See you on the dancefloor :)

SOUL-IDENTITY MUSIC PRESENTS TUMBAO W/ SPECIAL GUEST JAKE TELFORD (OK-MA)

The Soul-Identity crew return to Barrio North on Friday 8th August for the launch of their new night “Tumbao”. Tumbao aims to build on the vibe of the crew’s previous parties at the Barrio which saw some of London’s finest DJs grace the decks. Tumbao’s music policy will be aimed squarely at the dancefloor, bringing you music with that soulful swing, Latin and Brazilian breaks, broken beats and feel good soul and funk to get you in the mood for the weekend.

For the 8th, we’ve also roped in a bit of extra live goodness in the form of Mr Jake Telford (Ok-Ma / Favourite Things), who’ll be bringing down his myriad of horn instruments to accompany the music with his own brand of rhythmic flow.

Kick off is at 8pm and admission as always is FREE all night.

summer in the city

Apologies for the slackness recently. We are working on getting a regular blog up and running and not just using it for spam purposes (!). Regular visitors may have noticed that we are slowly integrating everything into a more coherent site design, instead of the disparate pages and random sub domains we were using before. Slowly surely. In the meantime you can check out the new radio site by clicking the radio option on menu bar above. Next project is to get the homepage up to speed and the podcast series back up and running (can you call it a series if we’ve done two in two years?). London is still as busy as ever and we’ve been experiencing a mini heatwave, so with lots of events going on and little time in the hq, the online elements have been slipping.

Anyhow, we’ve been digging deeper than usual and picking up more and more jazz and disco on the vinyl tip. As more and more record shops and distributors go under, its still important to support the original sources of music. Call us old-fashioned, but we still love the hum and the feel of a vinyl record when possible.

We’ve got a few gigs coming up in the next week or so, as Rob Coley will be guesting at the mighty Dom Servini’s live jazz session “Favourite Things” at the Proud Galleries, Camden on Monday 04 August, and we launch our new night “Tumbao” at Barrio North on Friday 08 August (more details to follow). At “Favourite Things” it’ll be a strictly vinyl jazz set (with a hint of Latin) and its free entry all night. The Favourite Things house band will also be dropping some science on the night and of course Dom will be on hand to show us how it’s really done. Should be a good night. If you can’t reach next week, you should check it out anyway soon, as it really is worth a Monday evening of your time sometime.

SOUL-IDENTITY MUSIC PRESENTS A SUPA SOUL SOUNDCLASH W/ SPECIAL GUESTS AIN’T NO NEW THING.

soul-identity vs ain't no new thing,

Yep, yep… its that time again. This Friday, we return to the Barrio after a two month absence for a supa soul soundclash of epic proportions. Joining us in the box this month will be the residents of one of London’s newest club nights, master Rhodesman and DJ in his own right, Mr Adam Scrimshire of Wah Wah 45s fame (Making his second appearance at the Barrio fact fans), and connoisseur of all things soulful, jazzy and funky Mr Sid Ford (File Under Jazz).

Musically, expect a mixed bag of goodness incorporating everything from classic funk, jazz and underground disco through to the eclectic rhythms of bossa nova, Latin boogaloo and Nuyorican soul. As with all soundclashes, the aim of the game this time around will be for each DJ duo to out do the other over a series of heats, using only their skills and the records in their bags.

Should be a hot one!

The fun starts at 8pm and admission is FREE all night.

Hosted By: soul-identity music
When: 04 Apr 2008, 20:00
Where: Barrio North
45 Essex Road
London, N1 2SF
United Kingdom
Description:

It’s that time again as the soul-identity Music bandwagon rolls into the Barrio for another night of fun, frolics and exceedingly good music. This month we welcome the very special talents of JC who runs the soul, funk, jazz, Latin and Afrobeat influenced imprint Here and Now Recordings.

Home to an assorted roster of artists comprising of Yam Who?, Funkanala, Motivators (who feature Manu Dibango’s rhythm section) plus new signings DJD and Chaz Jankel (with Angie Brown on vocals!), Here and Now Recordings are firmly committed to providing credible soul and jazz influenced dancefloor music. After making a serious impact by licensing the Funkanala anthem “Economy Class” to Defected for their Miami compilation, the label hasn’t looked back with their releases gaining DJ support from the likes of Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, Shuya Okino, Patrick Forge, Danny Krivit, Spiritual South, Kev Beadle and Seiji.

In the midst of celebrating the release of Record 4 (Motivators’ “Jobu / Le Groove De Prune” - fact fans), JC will be joining the soul-identity residents on the night to spin a mixed bag of dancefloor friendly business incorporating everything from New York City funk and disco boogie, Latin Afro breaks and beats, through to nu soul and future bruk basslines.

Admission as always is FREE.

First Friday of the month, 8pm till late.
